When a person is arrested, they do not lose their right to dignity. New Mexico jails have an unfortunately high rate of housing people in solitary confinement, especially the mentally ill. The conditions in solitary confinement are often unsanitary, filthy, and dehumanizing. People frequently go extended periods of time living in squalid conditions without leaving their cells and denied access to adequate medical or mental health services. These conditions are unconstitutional and unacceptable.
